Another month is here. And of course, with each new month we mark closer to summer and the glorious days of “Festival Season”. Summer or not, there’s always a killer show on in Wollongong (thank God). Here’s the Bear Media picks for the five most unmissable gigs this November.
(1) The Farmer and The Owl Festival, University of Wollongong
Saturday 23rd November
The most important word in the above sentence is “festival”. FESTIVAL! Wollongong now has it’s own boutique music and arts festival, the aptly named The Farmer and The Owl Festival, as brought to you by the lovable lads at Yours & Owls and Music Farmers. The inaugural installment of the festival is set to kick off with a bang, featuring 2013 J-Award nominees (Album of The Year) The Drones, as well as Dappled Cities, Glass Towers and Shining Bird, plus many more. Check the full story here, and stay watching Bear Media for all the interviews, news and cheeky back stage antics.
(2) The John Steel Singers, The Den Wollongong
Thursday 14th November
Brisbane’s The John Steel Singers are trekking their way across the country on the back of their sophomore record “Everything’s A Thread”. Along with pals Go Violets they’re playing 11 dates across the country, including a stop off in Wollongong at The Den. Their first single “Everything’s A Thread” has been played extensively on Triple J; little a day goes by when you don’t hear it at least once. Check the Event Guide for all the details of this one.
(3) End Of Exams Party feat. The Preatures, University Of Wollongong (UniBar)
Thursday 21st November
It’s been a big year for Sydney’s The Preatures. After releasing “Is This How You Feel?”, which Pitchfork called “a clear departure from their early material, showcasing a newfound dedication to rhythm and restraint”, the five piece was named on The Falls Festival alongside a string of big names including Vampire Weekend, played a country wide run of sold out shows, and trekked around the USA for the CMJ Festival. They’ll be headlining the End of Exams Party, a bill which also features local favorites Sures and Round The Corner.
(4) Patrick James, Rad Bar and Cafe
Thursday 7th November
He has toured Australia supporting Emma Louise, Josh Pike, The Paper Kites and many more, but now Sydney’s Patrick James is out on the road for an 8-date dance across the country. He’ll be joined by The Starry Field. To anyone who hasn’t heard the singer-songwriter in action. He’s on the back of his new EP “All About To Change”. Don’t miss a chance to see him in the lovely and intimate Rad.
(5) Round The Corner “Blacket Street” EP Launch, The Den
Friday 29th November
Yep, Round The Corner made it into this guide twice. Well done crew, you win the satisfaction of a job well done. Joined by Sydney’s Little May and local Rob Taylor, the group is set to launch their sophomore EP “Blacket Street”. We managed to get our hands on the first taste “Heart Felt Rubbish”. What do you think?
