Fusing the musical stylings of Jazz, Funk and Hip-Hop takes hard work, talented musicians and a lot of creative ambition, but it has definitely payed off for local Wollongong 9 piece band Dlinkwnt.
After winning the Greater Sydney area finals of the Australian Association of Campus Activities National Band Competition last Wednesday, Dlinkwnt is set to take on the state championships at the hard rock café in Sydney, but not before launching their debut EP at new music venue ‘The Den’ this Sunday.
Front man Nick Johnson feels relieved after the work they put into their debut album. “The EP has been a long time coming, after coming out last week it’s been doing really well on iTunes.”
Ben Abraham, manager of the launch venue ‘The Den’ exclaimed “We’re excited to have them perform, they are an electric live band”
Their unique and catchy sound won over both the crowd and judges at the Wollongong NCBC finals last month. Dlinkwnt won a convincing first place, earning themselves an EP package valued at $3000.
Johnson is excited for the band’s future. “We went in it with positive thoughts, but you never think you’re going to make it. We’re in the process of changing a few things for state, we want to bring everything up to another level.”
Despite their growing popularity Johnson assures fans that Dlinkwnt will stay true to their roots in Wollongong, looking to perform more regularly at the UniBar and large venues around the Wollongong area.
Dlinkwnt’s origins are a fundamental aspect of their unique style and sound. Influenced by The Cat Empire and Australian Hip Hop groups, their lineup consists of male and female vocals, drums, bass, keyboard, saxophone, trombone and two trumpets.
Trumpet player Jack explained that the contrasting styles and personalities of each of the band members work together to develop each of their colourful tracks. It is in their live performances however, where Dlinkwnt really has their edge.
“Live on stage is a thrill, with everyone grooving their heart out and we work well as a tight unit.”
The Band is passionate about sharing their music with their hometown and beyond through the release of the EP ‘Make it so’
“We’re keen and we’re going to give it our all on Sunday”
Dlinkwnt will be launching ‘Make it So’ at The Den on Sunday 22/9 from 6pm. The EP is already available digitally on iTunes.
